More than 800,000 children under the age of five die from pneumonia yearly, including more than 153,000 newborns. Though the number of deaths due to pneumonia has been decreasing every year, it still is the greatest cause of under-five mortality outside of deaths due to pre-term birth complications. There are 1,400 cases of pneumonia for every 100,000 children each year globally, with the highest incidence in South Asia (2,500 cases per 100,000 children) and West and Central Africa (1,620 cases per 100,000 children).
Pneumonia impacts and is influenced by several aspects of health and well-being. The pneumonia visualizer toolkit can be used to explore and visualize data that are related to pneumonia incidence, mortality, prevention, and treatment. This toolkit includes indicators related to pneumonia incidence, mortality due to pneumonia, WASH, nutrition, immunization, care-seeking, and solid cooking fuel usage. Data are available at country-level, and are encouraged to be utilized and disseminated for key stakeholders in-country to drive discussions and decisions around child pneumonia programmes and policies.
